Singlet oxygen is a type of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), typically generated as a byproduct of cellular respiration, and like other oxidants, it can be harmful in high concentrations. However, at low to moderate levels, singlet oxygen acts as a signaling molecule, playing a key role in regulating bodily functions through controlled oxidative stress. Recent studies have highlighted its function in stress-response hormesis, a concept where a substance that is damaging at high doses can have beneficial effects at low doses.
